ETR 250 "Arlecchino"![]() |
ETR252 |
Amazing find in the form of an unpowered model made by Del Prado and sold in newsstands throughout Europe as part of their 100-item "Locomotives of the World" publication. Pictured is one of the two end cars (with a portion of the adjoining car represented). The model is billed as the ETR 300 "Settebello," which was the 7-unit predecessor trainset to the 4-unit Arlecchino. The shorter trainset is better suited to my modeling situation. Plans call for constructing the intermediate cars (or purchasing from a modeler producing them in resin) and powering the set. |
E428 II![]() |
E428.xxx |
Another Del Prado rendition of yet another never-mass-produced model (how do they do it?). My inital impression was that it could be motorized using Arnold's E17/E18/E19 mechanism; this was quickly verified by another ASN member who went on to confirm that it wasn't easy - the donor chassis needs some modification to fit under the E428's shell (and the two-axle pilot trucks need to be fabricated). I've acquired three of these units, and the mechanisms to power them; now to find the time! |
D345 Diesel![]() |
D345.xxxx |
More modern than the Rivarossi D341, this loco is also based on a Del Prado model. |
ALn 556 "Littorina"![]() |
ALn 556.xxxx |
Del Prado strikes again with a distinctive pre-war diesel railcar that survived in service until just recently. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the model is a bit undersized; I still have to check this out for sure. The Green Max DT25 mechanism matches the wheelbase quite closely - if it'll just fit inside the shell! Stay tuned!! |
E550 Triphase![]() |
E550.025 |
Del Prado also chose to produce an example of a tri-phase electric loco from the early 1900s. This now discontinued electrical system employed two overhead wires (with very complex installation issues) to power the trains. The E550 was the first mass-produced electric locomotive in the world and one of the two remaining examples sits at the St. Louis Museum of Transport. Since this loco cannot logically run under single wire 3000 VDC catenary, I plan to rework and repaint one to match E550.025 and to extensively modify the other to represent one of the several de-motored Vnx snow plows used up north. |
E645![]() |
E645.xxx |
Another European publishing company, Compaņia International del Libro (CIL) is producing N scale static models similar to Del Prado. Their Italian "E636" is, according to the experts, really a model of the similar-looking E645. The unusual B-B-B wheel arrangement is unlike anything on the market, so this mechanism will have to be 'bashed from something else. My initial approach will be to see if I can make something workable from a couple of old Atlas (Roco) Geep mechanisms; my goal is to have at least four of the six axles powered and to pickup current on all 12 wheels. |
Gr880![]() |
Gr880.xxx |
CIL's only other Italian locomotive is this diminutive 2-6-0, one example of which recently arrived on SLF property. Mechanism possibilities TBD. |
Gr685![]() |
Gr685.xxx |
At one Time, Tibidabo planned to market an Italian mainline steam locomotive. Evidently, die work was done to produce the major body parts, but not much else. In recent years, sets of injection molded plastic parts, consisting of the boiler, cab, and cylinders have found their way to market. |
Gr691![]() |
Gr691.xxx |
Del Prado produced this decent looking model of the "Queen of Locomotives," a 4-6-2 Pacific. A good starting point for a working mechanism seems to be the Minitrix Pacific, preferably one of the German prototypes with the spoked wheels on the leading and trailing truck. |
