SLF in Operation!	Treni in Partenza!
Formazza - Jan 26: - The new SLF layout had its first outing at the Albuquerque Great American Train Show (GATS) the weekend of 24-25 January 2004. Notwithstanding an ambitious and meticulously planned construction campaign, only half of the visible layout had any sort of scenery. However, trains did run reliably and visitors voiced many favorable comments.	Il nuovo plastico SLF è stato esposto per la prima volta al pubblico alla Great American Train Show (GATS) di Albuquerque tenutosi il 24-25 gennaio 2004. Benchè l’esistenza di un ambizioso e meticoloso piano di costruzione, solo la metà della parte visibile finora in esercizio è stato completato. Tuttavia, i treni funzionavano bene ed i visitatori ci davano commenti favorevoli.

To date, the operating portion of the layout consists of the hidden Domodossola staging yard, the helix, the visible main line at Iselle, and the Simplon tunnel return loop. Train control was by simple DC power pack running just one train at a time. This resulted in a rather long interval between appearances, but did provide opportunities to strike up a conversation with spectators.	Fin oggi, la parte funzionante del plastico consiste della zona nascosta dello staging di Domodossola, l'elicodiale, la linea principale ad Iselle e il cappio di ritorno nascosto nel traforo Sempione. Il controllo era esiguito con controllatore C.C. che poteva far funzionare soltanto un treno alla volta. Ciò provocava un intervallo piuttosto lungo fra le apparenze del treno, ma forniva l’occasione di iniziare conversazioni con gli spettatori.

Prior to the show, I managed to complete the Hydrocal rock work and basic ground cover on almost one-half of the visible layout: the area around the Simplon Tunnel portals. My efforts to add a bit of green to the scene kept me busy over the course of the two day event and was the catalyst for dozens of informal scenery clinics as folks wandered over to see what I was up to and to ask questions. By the end of the show, I had covered the flat areas with dirt and grass, stained the remainder of the rocks, added greenery to the cliff face, and flocked and planted several dozen conifers. The uppermost level of the layout (future site of the Italian town of Formazza) is still a large void. To eliminate the distraction of vast scale acres of unpainted plywood, I covered this area with a couple of dark green plastic tablecloths trimmed to fit. To my eye this made the layout a bit more presentable but I left a small ‘peep hole’ at each end so that folks could have a look behind the scenes.	In anticipo dell'esposizione, sono riuscito a completare la zona rocciosa vicino al traforo del Sempione. Durante l’evento mi mettevo ad aggiungere qualcosa di verde alla scena. Facendo cosi, mi è venuto l’opportunità di istruire qualche persona sul come costruire paesaggi, scogliere, ed alberi. Alla fine, erbe, cespugli, ed altri dettagli si spuntavono dappertutto. Il piano più alto del plastico (luogo futuro della città italiana di Formazza) era ancora un grande vuoto. Per eliminare la distrazione del legno compensato nudo, coprivo questa zona con tovaglie di plastica verde scuro. Al mio occhio questo lo rendeva più presentabile anche se lasciavo due piccolo buchi fra cui I curiosi potevano ammirare le ossa nascoste della costruzione.
